Adjusting to American Culture

Boston hosts one of the largest international student populations in America.  For many international students, adjusting to American culture can be difficult and at times frustrating.  This fun and interactive workshop is designed to help international students navigate day-to-day issues and to better connect with people in our cross-cultural city.

This program will cover important topics such as:

  • Meeting and greeting – eye contact, handshake, use of names
  • Table manners – food, napkin, utensils, place setting, body language
  • Understanding dress codes – casual, formal, business casual, black tie
  • Behavior in public places – holding the door, lines, seating,
  • Sports and recreation – sportsmanship, language
  • Social protocols and taboos- covering your mouth, spitting, body odor
  • Invitations – RSVP’s, accepting, declining, gifts
  • Cell phone and technology etiquette – unplugging, voice volume
  • Language – small talk, sensitive topics, please and thank you
  • Nonverbal communication – eye contact, posture, touch, space

Willingness to understand a new culture and to adjust to the cultural differences will greatly contribute to a smooth and sufficient adaptation to the new environment.

After completing this course, students will have a better understanding of:

  • Small talk and making conversation
  • Avoid misunderstandings because of non-verbal communication or body language
  • Shaking hands and using names and titles
  • Social gatherings, invitations and dress codes
  • Dining and tipping
